Tutan (formerly Tutanota) is similar to ProtonMail in many ways, but the service is headquartered in Germany, which may raise the eyebrows of even the most privacy-conscious users. While Germany has strict privacy laws, the German government itself conducts extensive surveillance, providing a base for the NSA's extensive operations in Europe, and is known to co-operate with the NSA. But since Tutan stores all emails with e2e encryption, this doesn't matter.Tutan encrypts emails using AES-128 ciphers, RSA-2048 handshakes, and perfect forward secrecy instead of PGP, which allows it to encrypt the subject line of emails when sending them to other Tutan users, but it means that the system can't be used with the ‘regular’ PGP users.
