Inkscape is an excellent Illustrator alternative, free and open source for multiple platforms, available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Its biggest advantage is that it's free and offers a wealth of features such as creating vector and raster images.
The biggest difference between Illustrator and Inkscape, however, is the lack of AI tools, such as recolouring vector graphics. But the lack of AI tools isn't necessarily a bad thing for designers.
