Viber is a free instant messaging and voice calling application originally launched in 2010 and developed by Viber Media. It allows users to make text messages, voice and video calls over the Internet and is widely used in more than 190 countries worldwide.

Viber was acquired by Rakuten in 2014. Rakuten acquired Viber Media for $900 million, thus gaining a 100 per cent stake in the company. The acquisition was aimed at enhancing Rakuten's global platform and leveraging Viber's user base to drive its e-commerce and digital content services. Following the acquisition, Viber's company name was changed to ‘Rakuten Viber’ and it continues to expand its presence in the global market.
