Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI) is a website performance analytics tool from Google designed to help users evaluate how quickly web pages load and the user experience on mobile and desktop devices. By integrating data from the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX), PSI is able to provide real-world performance metrics and optimisation recommendations.

Key Features

Performance Scoring

  • PSI scores web pages based on a number of key metrics (e.g., First Content Draw FCP, Maximum Content Draw LCP, Cumulative Layout Offset CLS, etc.) on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better performance.
  • The scores are categorised as ‘Good’, ‘Needs Improvement’ and ‘Poor’ to give users a quick overview of how the page is performing.

Optimisation Recommendations

  • PSI provides specific optimisation recommendations based on best practices to help users identify areas of improvement, such as reducing rendering-impeding resources, enabling compression, optimising images, and more.

Real User Data and Lab Data

  • PSI combines real user experience data with lab test data to provide a more comprehensive analysis. Real user data reflects the experience of actual visitors, while lab data is the result of simulations in a controlled environment.

How to use it

  1. Visit the PageSpeed Insights website: Enter the URL you want to analyse.
  2. View analysis results: Wait for the tool to generate a report to view metrics and scores.
  3. Implement Optimisation Recommendations: Follow the recommendations in the report to make improvements to improve web performance.
